Service, Civic Responsibility, and Global Citizenship
Demonstrate civic responsibility, global awareness, and a commitment to service.
A developer needs to take ownership of the community in which they are developing. That level of involvement gives the developer a personal interest in creating a worth-while development. The aim with each development should be to create an improvement that benefits that entire community, not just those who have a financial stake in the property.
I think about civic responsibility a lot, and the role I want it to play in my career. Wherever I end up working after graduation, I will pay special attention to the needs of that community and how I, as a developer, can help to meet those needs. In the spirit of global citizenship, I will strive to gain as wide a perspective as possible with potential developments. That means getting input from local residents and business owners, but also adapting ideas and approaches that have found success in other regions. I want to use my position to lift up the voices of others whenever I can. Through my leadership roles in the MSC, global citizenship and diversity were two ideals I used to influence my decision making. As chair of the MSC film committee, I made sure to include films that offered a global perspective and could serve to broaden the horizons of our patrons. I hope to continue that commitment to global citizenship in my career.
This spirit of civic responsibility has been echoed throughout the courses in this program. My professors have done a great job ensuring that we recognize the power we will one day have and our responsibility to use that power in an ethical way. By giving us the tools and methods to be successful developers and teaching us why our roles matter, the program has already laid the groundwork for each of us to be ethical leaders who recognize the roles they play in their respective communities.
