Communication
Demonstrate the ability to acquire and interpret knowledge, and then use appropriate technologies to present conclusions orally and in writing.
Effective communication is an essential skill for a developer, both in written and oral form. Clear communication exudes confidence and will go a long way to assure any client or investor that you are knowledgeable and competent.
Personally, communication is something I have a complicated relationship with. I have a stutter, which makes verbal communication somewhat difficult. It doesn’t make it impossible, but I have to pay special attention to slowing down my speech rhythm if I want to be understood clearly. And that’s not to say I refrain from verbal communication. It’s quite the contrary. I love talking to people and making connections over conversation. I don’t allow my stutter to dictate what I say. I’m also careful to ensure that I’m understood. While verbal communication may not be a strength of mine, I make up for that with my written communication skills. I’ve always tried to be a clear and detail writer, making sure that I effectively get my point across.
Many courses in this program have made communication a crucial part of the curriculum. One that comes to mind for me is LDEV 687, taught by Dr. Youngre Noh. We had an assignment early in the class where we had to summarize a passage from our textbook about the regulatory process as succinctly as we could. This prepared me for our final project, where we had to write a memorandum regarding a potential development using the clearest language possible. Projects like this help to reaffirm the importance of a skill I have and refine it so I can utilize it in my career.
