Sustainable Development
Evaluate the latest knowledge and innovations in Sustainable Development to ascertain how property value and returns can be maximized.
Sustainability is key to any development. It is very important to ensure sustainability in a development, because without that assurance, there is no reason to believe that a project can stand the test of time. While a developer needs focus on meeting the relevant needs of a development and its community, it is crucial that they keep their eye on the future as well. Sustainable development is anticipating what the future may bring and tailoring developments with that in mind.
As broad and significant of a topic that sustainable development is, we didn’t really have a course in this program that covered it in depth. However, one class that did teach me a lot about sustainable development was actually one from my undergrad, URPN 330: Land Development I. That class, taught by Dr. Geoffrey Booth, gave me some of the basics of what developer needs to look for and strive for in a project, and it was that class that sparked my interest in this program. For that class, we were tasked with completing a quadruple net value (QNV) analysis for a housing development in College Station. In this project, we were expected to analyze the enduring value of this project from four angles:
1. Economic Value
2. Social/Cultural Value
3. Environmental Value
4. Sensory Value
These values serve to answer whether or not this property has value to potential consumers. In other words, the QNV analysis did a lot to answer the question, “is this property sustainable”.
